Should you sell your business?

This is a big question which should be thought about very carefully, we would suggest that you consult your financial and business advisors and never rush to sell. When considering the sale of your business you should think about more than just the financial implications. In most cases a business will have been built up over many years and will have provided you with a certain lifestyle. You must consider your next move carefully and make sure that you have weighed up all the pros and cons.  

You must consider why you are thinking of selling, this is where you must be brutally honest with yourself. Put your emotions and any frustrations that you may have towards the business to one side and ask yourself the following questions: Am I selling because it is the right time to maximize my return? Am I selling because I am fed up with the business?  

We would never suggest selling because you no longer want to work in the business. If the entire business relies on your involvement then you will probably not realize its true potential buy selling. Try to work yourself out of the business. If the business is built around your own expertise, knowledge, and reputation it will definitely limit your market and also the price. If this is the case in your business you must ask yourself what you are actually selling? If you are able to develop the business to run without your daily input then you have a business which we be much more appealing to buyers and will attract a higher premium.  

You may well find that if develop your business to run without your involvement you may no longer want to sell it. By developing your business in this way you have nothing to lose, you either now have a business which no longer solely relies on you, or a business which is more valuable and more saleable.
